Yearly photograph of the A.C.B.P. which includes lifeguards, officers, medical doctors and mascots
The Atlantic City Beach Patrol became an official ocean lifesaving force in June of 1884. It began with twenty lifeguards. Modern beach patrol members have varied in number but generally remain around 125.

During the days before casinos, it was not unusual for the force to experience 5000 rescues a summer as well as having 60,000 visitors treated by the medical staff.. Bathers use to swarm to the beach in such numbers, there were times when it was difficult to find a place to lay your blanked.

It is difficult to pass the test given to aspiring candidates each year, and only a handful are deemed good enough to wear the uniform. The A.C.B.P. enjoys an outstanding safety record.
